Today's strip is most definitely going to be edited for content; that's because the original version depicts Mike as having been spanked
for saying something Elly didn't feel like hearing.
(Strip Number 4210, Original Publication Date, 24 August 1982)Panel 1:
We begin things with Elly telling Mike to clean up his messy room.Panel 2:
Since he's eight and would rather not spend his last days of freedom cleaning, he whines about the unfairness of having to pick up this and tidy that.Panel 3:
He then makes the idiotic mistake of asking if he's some kind of servant in earshot of someone who's afraid that all she is is some kind of servant.Panel 4:
The pain stars radiating from his spanked bottom vanished owing to Lynn's need to revise history so that Elly never hit her kids; the asinine dialog about how he thinks he stole one of her lines hasn't. Instead of Mike sitting on his bed rubbing his sore rump, he's in the corner like he's Dennis Mitchell. Summary:
I might be a Martian picky-face who doesn't know what he's talking about because I don't have children but it seems to me that the reason Mike thinks that cleaning is the worst thing ever is that he has parents who think that way; John clearly ducks it whenever possible and doing so makes Elly wail and gripe so keeping things orderly must be inherently bad. Also, Elly has too short a fuse to be trusted with anything harder to take care of than a pet rock.
