Angry Candiru

Thursday, 30 June 2011

It's another example of Lynn's belief that animal cruelty is comic gold today as we are exhorted to laugh at Farley when he's in pain instead of wanting to kill Elly for not putting him on a leash or getting him neutered and avoiding all this.

(Strip Number 278, Original Publication Date, 1 July 1982)

Panel 1: As our story continues, we find Lawrence in the Pattersons' back yard; as he does so, he says Hello to a fairly happy Farley.

Panel 2: Farley's attempt to rush over to him is cut short as his leash half-way strangles him. Lynn highlights how funny having a dog get injured and confused is by drawing in a glaring pop-art caption.

Panel 3: Instead of, say, consoling the poor, confused animal, Mike merely observes that he's not used to his new leash yet.

Summary: My guess is that Lynn has a pat answer for those of us who want to point out that the dog is being punished for John and Elly's idiocy; that's because she's as eager to evade blame as they are.

The thing mostly speaks for itself save for one thing: Lynn's congratulating herself on how well the prep work for "In the Beginning, There Was Elly turning the commonplace into a huge-ass crisis of world-threatening proportionsChaos" is going. Perhaps when it shows up on our book-shelves, we can congratulate her on how her poorly-constructed mess of a book calls to mind life in the Pattermanse.
