Snarky Candiru2

Tuesday, 14 June 2011

In the first installment of the two-part farewell to the character, we see Mike panic because he misinterprets why Mrs Hardacre wants to talk to him.

(Strip Number 4186, Original Publication Date, 15 June 1982)

Panel 1: It's just before three in the afternoon on the last day of the school year; we find a beaming Mrs Hardacre thanking her students and telling them that she'll treasure the teacup and card they gave her forever.

Panel 2: As the last bell rings, she tells them that class is dismissed and to have a happy summer. Judging from the smiles on their faces, they intend to follow that assignment to the letter.

Panel 3: There's a bit of a hitch, though; that's because she wants a panicked Mike to stay behind for just a second.

Panel 4: Goggle-Eyed Mike thought-bubbles "A detention? On the last day of school?"

Summary: I am similarly goggle-eyed; that's because I remember that he's Margaret Hardacre's own personal Jesse Mukwa: a professional discipline problem that she's turned into a sort of pet. I also feel vaguely unsettled owing to my fear of a self-serving Lynnsight that the unwary will misapprehend as gratitude towards the teachers Lynn still resents for "lying" to her about how there are things she needs to know to get by in the world.
