Calm Candiru

Sunday, 5 June 2011

In today's strip, Elly tries to stall the inevitable question "Mommy, can I wear makeup?"; since she can't predict the future, she thinks that her attempt to do so will last until middle school.

(Strip Number 7118, Original Publication Date, 6 June 1982)

Panel 1: We start things off with Elly getting ready for an evening out with John; she's humming softly to herself as she applies foundation to her face.

Panel 2: Since Mike has disobeyed a direct order to keep Lizzie occupied, she somehow materializes and declares "Nizzie watch."

Panel 3: We all know that children wish to emulate their parents but since Lynn is sort of not up to speed on that, Elly is mildly confused by Lizzie's wanting to try dat, wanting to have dat (dat meaning eyeliner) on her.

Panel 4: Lizzie's agitated plea "Whassat? Mama, put some of dat on my face! Want the red stuff!" seems to have agitated Elly. Here she is putting on lipstick and this small person won't. go. away.

Panel 5: I can sort of see why Elly would get pissed off here; she's trying to apply mascara and Lizzie is tugging at her arm screaming "I want DAT, Mom!!"

Panel 6: She does actually seem to handle it well for a change, though; she does so by telling Lizzie that she can't have make-up until she's a grown-up lady.

Panel 7: As she carries a freaked-out and still envious Lizzie away, Elly congratulates herself on how, with any luck at all, she's delayed this sort of confrontation until Lizzie is twelve.

Summary: What Elly doesn't know is that some kid in Lizzie's first grade will have pierced ears and she'll have to dissuade Lizzie from getting them. Also, she doesn't know that when Lizzie is twelve, she'll be hectoring her to watch her sister because that's what siblings do.
