Snarky Candiru2

Saturday, 4 June 2011

We end the week (and, for the time being, Elly's attempt at further education) with her being grateful that at least one person allows her to boast without bringing her down with the question "Now what?"

(Strip Number 268, Original Publication Date, 5 June 1982)

Panel 1: As our story continues, we find ourselves watching Elly getting Lizzie ready for the day; as she puts on that probably tricky to get off set of overalls with the sort of ruffles that made Lileks gag, she tells her that Mommy passed her exam last night; in doing so, she reveals her creators' ignorance of the world.

Panel 2: As she zips the ugly thing up, she tells Lizzie that Mommy is proud of herself.

Panel 3: She tells Lizzie that Mommy has her first year English as she brushes her hair.

Panel 4: She concludes by thought-bubbling "It's nice to talk to someone who doesn't ask 'Now what?'"

Summary: The answer to that question is that she never really does move forward on that degree; while she might blame April for not giving her the time to do so, it's clear that her need to micromanage Mike and Liz's lives so that she might own their horses would have gotten in the way anyway. Besides, it would have been a valid question even if she'd gotten her BA in English in the first place; it's just a stepping stone that she'd need to get the B.Ed. that she should have pursued instead.
