Snarky Candiru2

Thursday, 19 May 2011

Today's strip is a reminder that John can be fairly suave when he wants to be. That's because he manages to almost get himself out of the trap in which Elly asks him who he's compared her to lately. Almost.

(Strip Number 263, Original Publication Date, 20 May 1982)

Panel 1: We see John and Elly sitting on the love seat; as he reads his paper, he asks if Phil has gone out with Connie; Elly frowns as she says "Uh-huh."

Panel 2: He sets up the punchline by declaring how romantic it is and how it makes a person want to fall in love all over again.

Panel 3: Elly smiles a little when John stammers out "I mean with you, naturally!"; that's because she still wonders about him and why he works so late.

Summary: I'd say 'Nice save' but Elly will never really lose the suspicion that John will be unfaithful to her. She'll be less insistent about bringing the subject up in a decade or so when John gets a time-consuming hobby that keeps him home but the fear is still there on some level.
