Snarky Candiru2

Sunday, 8 May 2011

In today's strip, Mike's asking Elly for some spare change for a little treat for himself gets an answer with a licorice-flavored string attached to it.

(Strip Number 7116, Original Publication Date, 9 May 1982)

Panel 1: We start things off with Mike and Lawrence getting off their bikes; since the word 'SCREEEEECH' appears in front of Mike's front tire, Lynn wants us to understand that there's a sense of urgency to this sudden stop.

Panel 2: Mike smiles and yells "Hey, Mom!" as he walks through the front door.

Panel 3: He then tells her that he and Lawrence are going to ride their bikes to the corner store and they need some money, okay?

Panel 4: We zoom out to find her going broke saving money by sewing her own clothes again; as she does so, she asks how much he needs. He says 'A dollar.' When she asks what he needs this dollar for, he says 'For stuff'; this raises the question of what kind of stuff.

Panel 5: Lynn will probably get on josephusrex's last nerve by having Mike explain "Well, uh, y'know, junk, penny candy."; that's because it's somewhat difficult to believe that a seven year old would call candy 'junk food'.

Panel 6: Age-inappropriate language aside, we find that Elly is willing to part with the pocket change if Mike agrees to a certain condition.

Panel 7: As they leave for the store, Lawrence asks what that condition is.

Panel 8: Mike's silhouette says "She gets the licorice."

Summary: It's sort of depressing to see how Elly's need to be thought of as an official adult keeps her from doing what people who realize that there's no government office that declares people grown-ups would do without even thinking about it: going down to the store and buying a bag of licorice for herself. Also, you'd have thought that the condition would be to not rat her out to the cops for turning her back on Lizzie if her neglect has negative consequences; that's because no one is watching Lizzie....again!!!
