Snarky Candiru2

Thursday, 21 April 2011

In today's strip, Michael asks Elly point-blank if the Easter Bunny is real; he responds to her sad-miracle level platitude with a statement that he's beginning to doubt things.

(Strip Number 241, Original Publication Date, 8 April 1982)

Panel 1: As Elly embroiders something or other, Michael asks her "Mom, is there really such a thing as the Easter Bunny? Does a rabbit really come along and leave eggs for us?"

Panel 2: She tells him that he's real as long as he believes in him.

Panel 3: Mike's statement that he's beginning to have his doubts confuses and saddens Elly.

Summary: That's because he was supposed to not doubt things; Elly tries to give good advice but since she doesn't know how to talk to the little stranger she'd rather not get to know because getting to know strangers scares her, she kind of blows it. Also, she has the odd notion that she has to shield her children from the truth as long as possible; their ignorance is her bliss.
