Snarky Candiru2

Wednesday, 20 April 2011

In today's strip, we begin the "Mike begins to doubt the Easter Bunny" arc; it starts with his saying the three little words that no Patterson (or member of Possum Lodge) ever wants to say: "I don't know."

(Strip Number 240, Original Publication Date, 7 April 2011)

Panel 1: Mike smiles as he tells Lizzie the Easter Bunny is coming soon; she sets up the conflict by asking "Why?"

Panel 2: Since he's being raised to think that asking questions is wrong, Mike gets mildly pissed and says "Just because, that's why?"; since Lizzie isn't yet at the phase where the curiosity has been screamed out of her, she asks "Why because?"

Panel 3: Mike tells her that that's a dumb question and she asks why yet again.

Panel 4: He outs himself as a Foob by saying that it's because he doesn't know the answer.

Summary: This, you see, is why Lynn never did well in school; simply put, she hates to confront being ignorant and having to suffer the humiliation of admitting that she needs to learn things. She hates that almost as much as she does having to talk about things that make her uncomfortable....as Elly's chickening out on what to tell Mike is about to show us.

The Death of Farley Podcast.

I was inspired by forworse's look at the four-part transcription of the canoeing series to do the same for her discussion of the death of Farley.

Notes:

- Most of the time when she talks about how Sparky reacted, she left out his asking the question "Where were April's parents?"; had he known, he'd probably have figured out that he couldn't, after all, blame a child for her parents' ineptitude. I know he was a sorehead with a competitive streak and a need to not deal with the past but even he wasn't that big a jerk.

- I think that most people could, after all, have realized that they were trying to process what McVeigh did; that's because I remember thinking that Farley's dying was a rather cruel coincidence.

- Lynn really, really likes to talk with her hands.
