Thérèse: The Unauthorised Biography

Part 5

In December, as an early Christmas present, Thérèse surprised Anthony with a weekend in Montreal. They went Christmas shopping in the Quartier Latin, rummaged through Bonsecours Market and strolled along the riverfront near the Old Port.

Immersed in the culture of the city and the memories of Thérèse’s childhood, they seemed to be living in one of the daydreams they’d shared when they first met. Thérèse was brimming over with excitement and Anthony was relaxed and affectionate, humouring her as she dragged him from one place to the next. They were happy together.

The next morning, he asked her to marry him. They were having breakfast in their hotel room, and he just blurted it out. He was so stunned by his own bravery that Thérèse burst out laughing. “Oh, don’t look so frightened, darling!” she said. “Of course I will!”

In today's strip, we remind ourselves that Elly's lack of attention breeds chaos she can't anticipate.

(Strip Number 233, Original Publication Date, 22 March 1982)

Panel 1: We start with a tight close-up of Elly as she freaks out and says "Oh, no! Not again!"

Panel 2: We then zoom out to look at her put a tentacle-fingered hand to her chin and, having surveyed a bathroom covered in toothpaste, thought-bubble about how amazing it is that there's so much of it in the econo-tube.

Summary: The problem with her inability to focus on her children is that when she does impose order (usually to show off to the neighbors), her children are so unused to being told to do things, they react violently in the negative. She also tends to not realize that children do not, after all, like to sit quietly with their hands folded while Mother cleans the house; she can never figure out that what she'd like is not what they'd do.
