Snarky Candiru2

Thursday, 6 January 2011

Today's strip has Mike encounter an adult of a sort he has never before met; the presence of a man who doesn't need to bluster or shriek to get his point across is a novel thing.

(Strip Number 211, Original Publication Date, 7 January 1982)

Panel 1: We fast-forward to eight in the evening or so and return our focus to the Pattermanse; as we do, we find Mike, who's in his pajamas, not wanting to go to bed. He tells Will "Aw, Grandpa! Just one more game! I don't want to go to bed...pleaaaaaaaaaaase, just one more game?"

Panel 2: Will says no.

Panel 3: Mike thinks about things for a second.....

Panel 4: ....and asks if that's a for-real no.

Summary: It's sort of a change of pace for Mike to have to deal with a grown-up who doesn't roar, scream or whine, isn't it? This sort of quiet authority, while inconvenient from the getting-away-with-murder standpoint, is a healthy thing because it shows Mike that there are other parenting styles aside from incompetence.
