Snarky Candiru2

Today's strip is the first in an arc in which Annie stands there whining about being a football widow only to be given stupid advice by Elly.

(Strip Number 174, Original Publication Date, 21 September 1981)

Panel 1: As Dot-Eyed Elly pours a cup of tea, Gorey-Eyed Annie is hunched-over with her arms crossed telling her "Here it is; the season I hate."

Panel 2: Elly tells her "Come on, Annie; the kids are in school, the air's cool, the leaves are turning...."

Panel 3: Annie makes a palms-out gesture with her tentacle fingers and tells her idiot friend she's not talking about autumn.

Panel 4: She sighs the sigh of martyrdom and says she's talking about football.

Summary: We're about to be smacked over the head with a reminder that to a fair number of women, football games (like most other team sports) are meaningless rituals that, for reasons they don't understand, transfix their husbands. (Note: the preceeding was not an attempt to deny them the right to that opinion despite Lynn's clear belief otherwise.) We're also going to be reminded that Lynn is no Guisewite or Eliot; Guisewite remembers that women are equally capable of mind-numbing idiocy that well-meaning men cannot understand and Eliot is more inclined towards praising Title Nine; Lynn's notes and the general tone of martyrdom and passive-aggressive bitchery about male folly and male domination and male exclusion of the females they impose on because they're evil, conflict causing men tell us that we're in for an awful week.
