Snarky Candiru2

In today's strip, Mike thinks that Elly's attempt to practice parental discretion is simply another means by which she keeps him from enjoying the good things in life.

(Strip Number 164, Original Publication Date, 10 August 1981)

Panel 1: In today's one-panel wonder, we see Elly turning off the set and telling Mike and Lawrence that she doesn't want them watching a program because of its PG rating; since Mike doesn't know what the initials mean (and since he thinks that Elly is a kill-joy who hates the idea of his having fun), he tells Lawrence that he isn't sure but he thinks that it means 'pretty good'.

Summary: This, of course, is meant to represent Mike not knowing what's best for him; the problem, of course, is that since Elly can be counted on to yell "No! No! No!" when he proposes doing harmless things that she doesn't approve of, her attempts at being responsible are misinterpreted as simply being more of her keeping him from having fun. I'd remind Elly and the Coffee Squawkers of the Foob who cried 'Wolf' but I'd be either ignored or deliberately misunderstood. I'd also be called a picky-face if I reminded people that the PG programs of the early eighties tended to be a lot less tame than they are now.
