Snarky Candiru2

Monday, 19 July 2010

In today's strip, John's spouting off about how cozy the Unabomber's vacation retreat is is interrupted by Michael's warning that the couch is rat-infested.

(Strip Number 151, Original Publication Date, Monday, 20 July 1981)

Panel 1: We see John sitting on a chair as Elly cooks their first supper at Not-actually-Ted's cabin; he smiles smugly as he says "There, you see...once you get the stove on and the place warmed up...."

Panel 2: Before he call tell Elly how it's actually kind of cozy, Doll-boy Mike tells him that the couch feels awful because it's got lumps in it.

Panel 3: John explains that this is to be expected as it's a summer place and bachelor's cabin.

Panel 4: He and Elly are gobsmacked when Mike says that the lumps are moving.

Summary: When I look at this, I have to ask myself "What would a normal person of average intelligence do when confronted with a cabin whose couch has become a nest for wildlife?"; my answer would be "Get the Hell out and tell the owner about how crappy his place is." I mean, if John had phoned home plate, he'd have been told to go to the other side of the lake. Since John shares being an abnormal person of subnormal intelligence who spends his life being limited by concrete thinking with his wife, he and Elly are simply going to assume that Ted is a really crappy housekeeper and think that sharing their domicile with creepy-crawlies is part of the real, authentic experience.
