Snarky Candiru2

Tuesday. 27 April 2010

Today's strip features Poor Put-Upon Elly thought-bubbling an alarming punchline about how Lizzie won't take All-Purpose Icky Tasting Medicine for her cold.

(Strip Number 3677, Original Publication Date, 28 April 1981)

Panel 1: We start off with Lizzie on the couch coughing her little lungs out. As she does so, Elly stands at the ready with a big spoonful of Children's Gagreflexol.

Panel 2: We now encounter the source of dramatic tension: the instinct most people have of avoiding bad-tasting things. This instinct is what forces Lizzie to turn away in disgust and ignore Elly's plea of "Come on, Lizzie; take the medicine. It's good for you."

Panel 3: Elly does have some good intentions here but she doesn't seem to, y'know, get that her looming over her child with a spoonful of something that smells awful isn't going to play with a toddler; that's why Lizzie's responding to her "Just a little bit...please, baby?" by trying to slap the thing away completely baffles her.

Panel 4: Elly's thought-bubbled maundering "but leave a bottle of aspirins within her reach and she'd down the whole works" scares the shit out of me; that's because Elly regards the whole idea of keeping toxic chemicals and having to phone the poison control centre as another way her children are conspiring to make her life miserable.

Summary: Before you start wanting to call the cops on Elly, think about this: there are people on gocomics.com who would react to any criticism we might make not with a reassuring "It sucks but it's just a cartoon" but with an angry, self-righteous defense of Elly's right to be a negligent fool. And here we thought that we'd have nothing left to say after she went to straight reprints in the dailies.
