Snarky Candiru2

Wednesday, 21 April 2010

We're in for another gag at the expense of the kids today; that's because Annie tells Elly that not being seen with children makes one look younger and not having to be Mom-mom-mom-mommed every five seconds makes one feel younger. Nice, huh?

(Strip Number 132, Original Publication Date, 22 April 1981)

Panel 1: We catch up with Elly at Philpott's; as she and Annie (who both have their children in the standard docked configuration) are doing the shopping, she holds up a jar of wrinkle cream and says “Look, Anne...I'm tempted to buy some of this Look Younger formula.”

Panel 2: Anne's silhouette says “I'm not! I have the perfect 'look younger' formula...”

Panel 3: “....leave the kids with Grandma.”

Summary: This is, as aprilp_katje said, completely out-of-character for Annie; she loves being near kids and she thinks that her mother dropped the ball as a parent; it would have made much more sense to have Connie be all about leaving the kids with a sitter. Also, it's another example of Lynn's irritating “Motherhood is a thankless, exhausting burden that one simply has to endure” thesis.
