Red Alert: Guest Columnist On Deck.

Remember how the original premise of FOOB is "CHILDREN ARE GREEDY AND SELFISH AND BAD AND THINK THAT WE MOMS ONLY EXIST TO CATER TO THEIR NEEDS!!!" owing to Lynn being a child bride who can't understand that other people don't see the world how she does? It seems that her strip has become a flypaper for a Covid mom who laments her own loss of autonomy.

Meet The New Pathetic Wimp Mom, Same As The Old Patethic Wimp Mom.

April 7, 2021

A couple of months ago, I received a lovely letter from a young mom, telling me how similar her life was to Elly Patterson’s and how much she related to the strip. Sarah talked about her kids, the mess, her life and her dreams—and that everything was on hold now that parenting was her overwhelming new reality. I wrote back. I said “If nothing else, you are a wonderful writer—when you have time, maybe you should focus on that!”

Sarah returned my letter. She was indeed a writer and had planned a career as a playwright or a novelist, but with two little kids, there weren’t enough hours in the day. Her letter was great fun and worthy of another exchange. I asked for her email address. I told Sarah that we had been thinking about having a guest columnist create a weekly article on parenting for the FBorFW website and would she like to give it a try. She was more than happy to take a shot at it. What fun! A Zoom call revealed a young woman—so like Elly Patterson when I started the strip, it was uncanny.

She sent a photo and I drew a caricature of Sarah which looks like someone from Elly Patterson’s neighbourhood; a mom she could relate to, confide in and whine with. Her kids are at “that age.” Her hair is loose and needs combing, her clothes are drip-dry, her face shows the exhaustion from “a day in the life” of a stay-at-home mom. Bingo. A kindred spirit for sure!

After a few test runs, we are now ready to go “live”. May I present Sarah L. Hunter, a young mom, in the thick of it all – ready to let you know what life is like for a new “Elly Patterson” in 2021. It’s fun to see that despite the 40 years between us and all the new technology…some things don’t change at all.

Introducing Sarah L Hunter:

Given the setting, it's probable that Sarah is as blind to the idea that children aren't evil sponges that eat happiness as Elly and Lynn are. After all, her essay tends to depict her as a real-life Elly because of the whole "children are born helpless on purpose to make my life worse" thing she has going because of the "WAH! I have to WAIT until they're older to live my life!! NO FAIR!!!" bullshit that informs Elly's character:

I have an answer to Elly's blathering about how unfair her life is. Actually, Thaddeus Venture does:
