Snarky Candiru2

Sunday, 23 August 2009

Since it seems that Lynn might actually do herself and everyone else a huge favor and stop cranking out these stupid new-ruins, we might expect to see another Sunday strip that has characters wondering about their future. This is especially appropriate given how it's about one year since the Settlepocalypse.

Actually, it's not; what it is is Elly feeling martyred because she knows that Mike isn't infinitely gullible and thus will learn to resist empty flattery in the service of busywork.

Panel 1: We start things off with Elly watching Mike playing with action figures.

Panel 2: She puts a hand on his shoulder and says 'Honey, I want to talk to you.'

Panel 3: She looks him in the eye and says 'Michael, you're a big clever boy now.'

Panel 4: He smiles politiely as she says 'Daddy and I feel it's time we gave you some grown-up responsibility.'

Panel 5: He smiles eagerly as she tells him 'From now on, your jobs will be clearing and setting the table, keeping the shoe corner tidy and putting away your own laundry.'

Panel 6: LinusMichael smiles happily and says 'I guess I really am a BIG kid now!'

Panel 7: A few minutes later, a freaked-out John tells Elly that Michael is actually doing those chores she gave him.

Panel 8: He smiles and says that whatever she told him sure worked.

Panel 9: Her face is frozen in the Bug-Eyed Glare of Existential Terror as she allows as how the trouble with what she did is that THAT particular ploy only works once.

Summary: This, sadly, is sort of on the beam; Mike would soon learn to see that the only time Elly tried to praise him is when she wanted something from him. Also, she ended up doing all that anyway because he never did it exactly like she did so he was doing it wrong just to make work for her.
