Panel 1: So it's all well and good. It does stand to reason that Viv would be ready for a guest the day before. Not everyone is like Elly, after all. But Liz...Is she a compulsive liar, or at least confabulator? It's not that she couldn't wait to get there; she was offered a ride.
Why not just say that?*
Panel 2: Oh, you've got to be kidding me.
You have absolutely got to be kidding. Sorry I can't be more articulate. The time to get in touch with him was YESTERDAY. (In strip time, of course.) I think this settles it. Paul is incidental to Liz, and Liz has less responsibility and consideration than a ten-year-old. Not that it matters, because this is Gary's cue for "Uh, yeah, about Paul..."
Panel 3: I got nothing to say. I'm just doing a happy dance.
Panel 4: Okay, Liz. Now imagine it was Paul saying this, with "Anthony" replacing "Susan".
Panel 5: I love Gary's "O RLY?" expression. Liz, the pleasure is going to be OURS. I just hope (vainly) that SOMEONE will point out that Liz brought this on herself.
*I once arrived early for a theater production, and hung out in the cafe across the street until they opened the doors. "You're here early!" "Well, if I hadn't been early, I would have been late." Meaning, the bus schedule was such that I had two choices: arrive an hour before curtain, or half an hour after. Got an odd look from the usher, though.
