Panel 1: We find Dan and Bev working in the barn. When Dan asks if Mike is still brooding about that girl, Bev says "Uh-huh."
Panel 2: She then makes me wonder if her head is screwed on straight when she says that she sent him out to swath the field to keep his mind off of things. This is why farm life is better than any pool hall. If you need to be distracted, there's nothing better than climbing onto an expensive, dangerous machine that will kill you if you make a mistake running it. Also, you must never be closely supervised or clearly instructed.
Panel 3: As he plows through the field in an ever-shrinking spiral, Mike muses that love and crop farming are alike because you keep going around in circles.
Summary: What we have here is an example of a useful bit of law enforcement slang: JDLR which is short for "just doesn't look right." This is because Mike's so fixated on his own self-pity that he's making a mess of something. Well, to be sure, his being poorly instructed and not at all supervised helped but it's mostly his being a gloomy twerp obsessed with his own needs that makes things a mess.
