Panel 1: At some point after Liz wants to freeze time, we find ourselves in the kitchen watching Elly happily informing John that Mike phoned and told her about how Dan is putting him to work all day. Today, he 'painted' the grain sheds.
There are two reasons this delights her. First, she thinks that stoop labour on a farm is 'better' and 'more wholesome' than working in a fast food joint. Second, he'll be too tired to talk to that girl she knows is bad for him, she just knows it!!!
Panel 2: We then flash back to earlier that day as Dan tells Mike that their neighbours keep saying that the grain sheds look pretty bad but a coat of paint will spruce them up.
Panel 3: He opens the one paint can he has and says that while there's not much left, it'll do the job. Mike asks him how.
Panel 4: Since Dan is kind of lazy and antisocial, he says "Just paint the sides facing the road."
Summary: This is the doofus they think is superior to someone who'd show him how to do useful things, teach to interact with the public and actually pay him. They're wonderful judges of character, aren't they?
