Panel 1: Michael tells Martha that they said he could stay if he found a good job before asking where he's supposed to find one. Since she's a sounding-board and might just as well be Lawrence or Gordon, Martha dunno. Neither of them know that no job will be good enough to keep him from going to the farm.
Panel 2: When she proposes the sensible idea of actually looking for one, Mike reminds us that he has no idea what want ads and the job board down at Services Canada are when he asks where he's going to look.
Panel 3: He then says that this whole thing is ruining his life and makes his stomach ache. She sets up the punchline by asking what he's going to do about it.
Panel 4: We can see the dawning light of recognition in her eyes when she goes into 'deer in the headlights' mode as he responds "By not thinking about it."
Summary: What Elly never realizes is that she's actually doing Martha the greatest favour one could bestow on someone she looks down on: giving her time to reconsider her relationship to a passive drone who shuts down in the face of big decisions.
