Panel 1: Having noticed that Liz is so blasted confused and lost that she's weeping openly, John volunteers to help her with the homework she doesn't actually know how to do because he can't stand to see her so miserable.
Panel 2: A little while later, we find him tell a delighted Liz that most of her problem was making a great big thing out of her assignment. You see, when you blow something out of proportion like she did, it looks much bigger than it really is. It isn't that you have no blasted idea how to use reference material or that the core concept is gibberish to you, you just have to calm down.
Panel 3: The key is to sit back, relax and before you know it, you're all done.
Panel 4: A while later, we find Liz looking on in confusion when John suffers the same paralysis she did when faced with doing his income tax and paying the bills. This is so Lynn can eventually write a passive-aggressive pile of poo wherein she gets snippy at people who ask "Shouldn't a professional like him hire someone to do that for him?"
Summary: Since there's a lot of John in Liz, it should come as no surprise that he is where she gets being a chirping nitwit who tells Martians to pace themselves from.
