Panel 1: As Elly types up a book review, we find her wincing in pain and telling herself that she should have gotten it ready for the paper hours ago but she can't sit much longer.
Panel 2: She then sets up her eventually being replaced by a succession of high school students by telling herself that she should phone the library and tell them that she's ready to take time off.
Panel 3: She then second-guesses herself because she remembers that some women work until they're ready to give birth. Where, she asks, are qualities that she doesn't as such have? Where are her courage, strength and stamina?
Panel 4: We then get beat over the head with how awful it is to be in the family way when she's depicted as being about to give birth to a sperm whale calf and thought-bubbles that they're all probably in the same place where she left her size 10 pants.
Summary: Submitted for your approval, one Elly Patterson: a woman so stupid, she assumes that birthdays and baby showers are a blight on humanity because she believes that she's asked to celebrate death and pain and misery. In a week's time, she's about to take a journey into the Fooblight Zone.
