Panel 1: As Lamaze wraps up for the night, we finally get around to hammering home how John and Elly are Very Special People Indeed and totally not another couple who wound up having a child when they're either forty or about to turn forty when Elly tells John that it's sort of strange being the Oldest People In The Class because the others look like children to her.
Panel 2: She asks him to remember how excited they were at that age and how they looked forward to the birth of their first baby.
Panel 3: She sets up the ultra-cynical 'joke' when spouting a platitude about how nice it is to have the confidence (poorly-remembered) experience (that one inevitably draws the most catastrophically wrong-headed conclusion possible from) brings. When she says that being parents already has its advantages, John agrees.
Panel 4: This is because (to her surprise because that's usually her line) we know what we're in for.
Summary: Actually, Johnny, you ain't got two clues what you're in for and you never did. As much as I criticize Elly for coming to insane, stupid and destructive conclusions, John is sometimes worse in that respect.
