Panel 1: We find ourselves watching Liz ask Mike where Mom is. As he makes himself a sandwich, he tells her that she's gone next door for coffee.
Panel 2: She makes her own sandwich and dismissively says "Yack, yack, yack....I wonder what they talk about."
It should be noted that Liz doesn't actually have any curiosity as to what Elly and Connie are talking about. What she means is "Why should anyone care about any conversation that doesn't rotate around me and my own life?"
We're about to see where she gets that from.
Panel 3: Where she gets that from tells Connie that she was going to phone her but her kids were tying up the phone. Connie commiserates because Molly The Ghost is on it for hours on end.
Panel 4: Elly dismissively huffs "Yack, yack, yack....I wonder what they talk about."
Summary: It should be noted that Elly has no real curiosity as to what her or any one else's children might have to say. Her statement means "I wonder why they don't just admit that their concerns are pointless and unimportant because I'm not directly affected."
This segues into John being an avatar for Lynn's anti-midwife GP.
