Panel 1: We start things off with John telling Elly that he thought it would add to the holiday decor if he ran one of his trains around the tree.
A normal person would lay track in such a manner that it is not intrusive or showy. Guess what John does?
Panel 2: If you said "Ask his gobsmacked wife if she thinks that a model train layout that takes over the whole living room is in the way," you know the same "John, The Stupid Train Man" I do.
Summary: Lynn's reaction to a hobby that is 'bad, crazy and wrong' because she a) cannot understand the appeal, b) resents anything that keeps Rod from fulfilling his destiny of being her valet and c) makes him a far more interesting person than a tetchy recluse no one much likes is to make John into an insane idiot who regards any space not occupied by model trains as going to waste.
