Before we begin the depressing as anything "Liz fears that she's about to be replaced so wants to feel needed and loved" arc, let's watch Elly not understand who's at the door when John needs to be let in.

(Original Publication Date, 24 September 1990)

Panel 1: As Elly types up another not at all biased or misleading review that people who aren't her, HONEST are waiting to read, she hears a scratching noise and yells for someone to let the dog in.

Panel 2: Since no one jumps to attention, she gets rage-faced and yells "For Heaven's Sake, cut it out! I'm coming!!" as she goes to let the dog in.

Panel 3: The 'joke' is that it's not Farley that needs to be let in. It's John scratching at the door because he's carrying grocery bags he's too stupid to put down on the porch.

Summary: The interesting thing is that this sitcom joke that's predicated on John being too stupid to live flows organically to his being gobsmacked because something is making Liz forget what her job is.
