The on-coming storm (in April)

As we know, we're about a month away from the great sea change in the strip that's the end result of Elly being unaware of any sort of protection that actually works. We also know that she blames April for most of the bad things that happen to her later on in life because she wants to talk about careers, travel plans, finally getting her Bachelor of Arts and having titles more important than Mom because she'd rather not face the fact that most of the reverses in her career happen independent of a dependent. Passive-aggressively stewing about children's love lives and obsessing over operating without reading a manual that she herself was afraid to read looks very much like an excuse to be distracted from things that would help her and paying attention to signs that her life is about to be less wonderful.

The reason that I bring this up is that I'd like your thoughts on how Elly would managed to avoid doing important things if her life had continued to unfold the way she thought it would back when she yelled that she's reclaiming her sanity now that the kids aren't underfoot to drive her crazy having to care about their problems.
