Panel 1: We find ourselves at the jewellery counter as Elizabeth asks Daddy to buy Mommy a ring and pointing out a beautiful one.
Panel 2: When John balks a little and reminds her that it's a friendship ring, Liz cheerfully explains that she knows this.
Somehow this convinces him to buy it because of what happens next.
Panel 3: When he purchases the ring, the man at the counter asks John if he'd like to take advantage of the on-site engraving. John says that he would.
Panel 4: He smiles as he tells him to have it say "To Elly...my best friend."
Summary: This is nice and all but we all know what Elly's reaction to getting the thing is gonna be: screaming "You don't love me!!!!' at the top of her damned lungs and spending months pointlessly upset because she's gotta nail herself to her God-damned cross.
The odd thing is that this only looks like the end. The real end is Monday when we get a Very Special Message that we should be discussing today but aren't because Lynn can't seem to understand that she doesn't necessarily have to have the strip that ran on 25 December back in the eighties or nineties appear on 25 December in the twenty-tens or twenty-twenties.
