We reach the depths of bathos as John mourns the injury to his fucking car to the extent that he doesn't notice what it's doing to his wife.

Panel 1: We find ourselves at Richard and Ted's body shop watching John look at his damaged car in a way that he'd probably never look at his own family. As Elly stares at us in a fixed expressiob of horror, the on-duty mechanic looks at the mawkish display in the service bay with the same look of sorrow John has and asks her if they should leave them alone together.

Summary: This is not the weirdest and silliest thing in this arc. The weird and silly thing is the shocking swerve in John's attitude tomorrow. It's only after he realizes that Elly wants to be punished that he calms down so he can continue to find women baffling.
