Panel 1: A while after the inevitable unproductive argument in which Georgia probably got all kinds of defensive and stupid about how since she never uses screwdrivers, he shouldn't complain about her packing it away, we find Phil at the Pattermanse telling John and Elly that they were going to look at their new house so decided to stop by. It should be noted that John and Elly are doing their own damned yardwork for a rather telling reason.
Panel 2: As John trims the hedges, Phil waxes rhapsodic about looking forward to mowing his own lawn, fixing his own sink and painting his own lawn.
Panel 3: Phil sets up the passive-aggressive slam of the kiddies by reminding John that there's a real incentive to do that sort of thing when you own your own house. John agrees.
Panel 4: Since he doesn't realize that he's a shitty fucking failure of a father who let his selfishness and entitlement destroy any sort of bond of trust with his kids, Trash Bag Johnny surprises Phil with the received response "It comes from knowing that no one is going to do it for you."
Summary: John can't connect his being a sub-human piece of shit with the lack of willing help he receives because that would tend to mean looking in the mirror and seeing the asshole he actually is instead of the great guy he thinks he is.
