When John makes more sense than he should when comparing Elly's need to fuss over him at the men's wear department to her playing with a Ken doll, the accuracy of the comparison confuses her.

(Original Version: Strip number 6751, Published 30 July 1989)

Panel 1: We find ourselves at Philpotts as Elly declares that she and John have "accidentally" arrived at the men's wear department. John says "So we have."

Panel 2: When John tries to absent himself because he knows what he's in for, she gets all rage-faced and tells him "GET BACK HERE!!"

Panel 3: The strip proper begins with her telling him that the sweater she's shoving at him goes well with his shirt and would look better with the new trousers she's picked out.

Panel 4: She doesn't notice that he's all kinds of irritated by her talking about how she LOVES that sweater because he can wear it to the beach or a house party because he's flashing back to back to school sales.

Panel 5: As he heads to the dressing room, she tells him to wait because she's got even more stuff for him to try on.

Panel 6: When she declares the end result wonderful because she could wear her peach outfit with his tie and the trousers will look darling with his brown sports coat, we begin to see why he hates shopping with her. After all, it is rather irritating having to deal with a woman who regards the fact that men hate the adjective "darling" being used to describe their personal appearance as an attack on her person.

Panel 7: John futilely tries to call Elly's attention to how her fussing over him makes him feel by asking her if she ever played with Barbie dolls as a child. She says "Sure!!" because she doesn't know what he's trying to say and probably never will.

Panel 8: When he asks her if he had a Ken doll as well, she says that she didn't but always wanted one before asking him why.

Panel 9: When John says that he was just wondering about that, Elly is mildly confused because she cannot understand why he'd think what she's doing is in any way like dressing up a Ken doll.

Summary: This is because Elly is Lynn and thus has a hard time understanding what other people might be thinking. If she cannot liken something to something, she draws something like this and writes notes about how this is taken word for word from real life.
