John isn't much help with the baby at night because he looks and acts like a pissed-off grizzly bear when he doesn't get enough sleep.

(Strip Number 1470, Original Publication Date, 27 June 1989)

Panel 1: It's pitch-dark o'thirty in the morning, Lizzie is crying to be nursed and Elly does something really God-damned futile and asks John to take his turn getting up for her.

Panel 2: Since John only seems to want to interact with his kids when he doesn't have to do anything remotely difficult like "empathize with their concerns", the repulsive man-baby howls to Elly about how he doesn't see why he has to get up when she's the only one that can feed her.

Panel 3: We get a foreshadowing of the very ugly strip in which his default response to a sick, crying four year old is "pummel her into silence because he's too stupid to admit that fatherhood means sleepless nights" as he scowls in unalloyed rage because Elly tells the back of his stupid head that Elizabeth needs to be nurtured by both parents and needs to see that Daddy gets up in the middle of the night too.

Panel 4: As she watches Rage-Faced John scare the Hell out of Baby Lizzie by scowling at her, Elly moves so as to grab her out of his hands and thought-bubbles "Then again, why subject a newborn to unnecessary trauma?"

Summary: Again, I wonder what Rod could have done this time to merit this sort of passive-aggressive castigation. All we ever get is "John only wants to interact with the kids when it's 'fun'" and, aside from the possibility that he deferred to his mother and let her raise the kids, we never have the least idea why.
