(Strip Number 5131, Original Publication Date, 16 May 1989)
Panel 1: A few minutes later, we see Elly blanch and go goggle-eyed with horror because Mike tells Liz to pass the [REDACTED] ball and get cursed at in return.
Panel 2: When she frog-marches Mike into the house to be lectured at and be subjected to a wildly harsh punishment, Liz makes the mistake of saying that all kids talk like that. Since Elly wants to think of herself as being a good parent, she says that HERS do not!!!
Panel 3: Despite the fact that she's already come up with the answer (television), Elly wants to know where Mike developed that horrible foul mouth of his.
Panel 4: When Mike makes a smart remark about how when he was born, everyone said that he looked like dad, the implication that she and John might bear the least bit of responsibility for a trait she doesn't like infuriates her.
Summary: Not only does this allow Elly to maintain the laughable and unsupportable delusion that she is 'better' than mothers who don't mind a bit of profanity, it's also complete nonsense for another reason. As I said, Elly doesn't ever want to admit that if the kids do something she doesn't like, she has to answer for it. She didn't like it when she thought he was faking being sick and had to be sent home and she ends the strip not liking it when it's implied that April is right not to trust her.
