Panel 1: A short while later, we find Liz interrupt John as he roots around in the fridge to ask where Elly is; he explains that she's at Connie's drinking coffee.
Panel 2: As he opens his can of what is probably soda, she asks him why Mom always goes over there instead of being over here where she can ask things of her. John claims not to know why either.
Panel 3: As we zoom out to see the mess she and Mike leave behind them, John makes a comment about how for some reason, Elly just can't relax when she's in her own kitchen.
Summary: The problem is that even if John is trying to explain that the kids leave the place too messy for Elly's peace of mind, they're not going to help because Elly tends to disincentivize helping out.
