Since Elly is crazy and stupid, she actually means it when she reacts in baffled horror to John's approval of her new hairstyle.

(Strip Number 1437, Original Publication Date, 5 April 1989)

Panel 1: As she drives home, the look on Elly's face is that of despairing horror when she asks herself what she's done to herself because she never thought that her trip to the salon would lead to the Perm From Hell.

Panel 2: This is because she's afraid of what John will say because since she can barely recognize herself, he won't be able to either. (Insert comment about his probably being like Mike here.)

Panel 3: When John does come home and genuinely approves, Elly is mildly and pleasantly shocked.

Panel 4: When he gets all randy and huggy, she gets all gobsmacked as she again thought-bubbles "What have I done?" because she was expecting disapproval instead of the far worse outcome of his getting turned on by Horrible Eighties Hair.

Summary: You've unleashed a beast called "Lukewarm approval that is tired of picking ceramic out of its scalp because you answer mild ribbing with disproportionate violence" and his pal "Big hair? ME WANTEE!!!"
