(Strip Number 1429, Original Publication Date, 16 March 1989)
Panel 1: As she washes the dishes, Elly tells Mike to close the fridge; he tells her that he's looking around in it.
Panel 2: What he's looking around in it for is something 'good' like pizza or chicken legs. Since he can't find any, he asks what's going on. Elly claims not to know.
Panel 3: She then makes a theatrical and sarcastic display of praying to the refrigerator so that it might provide her son with things to satisfy his cravings.
Panel 4: Since he doesn't like having to deal with absorbing wiseassery, he tells Elly to get real. She tells him to wait because it could work.
Summary: One must remember that Elly does seem to think that if a child says that he or she isn't hungry for what she's willing to serve up, said child isn't really hungry at all and is simply trying to bust her ass. One must also remember that Elly hasn't any idea of how being a condescending jerk too big and important to simply say "Food costs money" does a number on her kids' ability to relate to her.
