Panel 1: Upon returing home, Liz reminds Elly that while she did go to the store for the milk, she don't have it because she got robbed.
Panel 2: The "something better" she came up with is a story about how two older boys came up behind her and grabbed her and stole the bag wif the milk in it.
Panel 3: When Elly asks her to describe the boys, Liz dunno because it was dark.
Panel 4: When Elly repeats the adjective 'dark' in an effort to clarify what Liz means, she's dumb enough to think that Elly is going to buy her statement that she had her eyes shut at the time.
Summary: What Liz loses sight of is that by lying so as to avoid the angry lecture that has its premise "If you actually had real feelings that could be hurt, you wouldn't disappoint me all the time", she's set herself to become The Liar who lies all the time in order to hurt her pooooooor mother.
