Having come to Mike's rescue, Elly has to absorb the boy's lack of self-awareness when he wonders why people give birth to the same sort of annoying jackass he is.

(Strip Number 1427, Original Publication Date, 24 February 1989)

Panel 1: A few minutes later, we see MA-MAH!!!! changing Leah's diaper. As she does so, Mike apologizes to Elly for having to call her over. She tells him not to worry.

Panel 2: This is because this was his first time as a baby-sitter and she kind of expected him to need a bit of help.

Panel 3: Having looked in on the kids and seen nothing wrong, Elly asks Mike if he's got any questions for her. He does.

Panel 4: When that question turns out to be "Do people know what they're in for when they decide to have children?", Elly is gobsmacked because she never expected it to come out of his mouth this soon.

Summary: She was probably expecting it when he started talking about how big a handful his own kids are. That being said, he is never going to expect the "You're a fine one to talk" speech because he remembers himself as being a nicer, smarter and better-behaved kid than he was.
