(Strip Number 1401, Original Publication Date, 28 January 1989)
Panel 1: We find ourselves at the breakfast table watching Elly telling Liz to take the tape she's wrapped around her nose off. Liz refuses.
Panel 2: Instead of doing something weird and silly like asking her what's wrong, Mother Of The Year tells Liz that she looks ridiculous because mocking a child with self-image issues is always the right thing to do if you suck. Liz don't care about what Mrs "Oh, Oh, OH!!! I'm over thirty!!! I'm too OLD and UUUUUUGLY to LIVE!!!!!!!" thinks.
Panel 3: Marian probably feels someone is walking over her grave right now when Elly stands around trying to make sense of Liz's anguished declaration that she hates her nose and her face because they're ugly and stupid. This is because she had to deal with Elly saying much the same thing for much the same reason in the middle 1960s.
Panel 4: Scowling Scowler Who Scowls All The Time Elly unwittingly says something exceedingly hypocritical when she tells Liz that the only ugly thing on her face is that frown on it. The reason I say that she is not aware of how full of shit she is happens to be due to how it takes until next Saturday for her to remind us where Liz got being insecure about her looks from.
Summary: You know how Elly gets all whiny and junk about how Liz seeks out the advice of strangers when she's always there for her? Maybe if she had more in the shop window was ridicule, self-pity and hypocrisy, she might draw more foot traffic.
