We begin the "Liz has no friends because she doesn't smile" arc with Elizabeth using exact words to tell herself that despite not doing so, she actually gave Teacher what she wanted.

(Strip Number 1397, Original Publication Date, 23 January 1989)

Panel 1: We start things off with Elizabeth writing "friendship is very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very important."

Panel 2: She hands the page to John and explains that her teacher said that she had to write a whole page on the importance of friendship.

Panel 3: As she saunters off, she tells John that her content-free sentence that doesn't explain why friendship is important was a whole page.

Summary: Either John or her teacher probably kick-started things into motion by pointing out that she was actually supposed to explain why the friends she has mean the things to her that they do; since he can't be asked to involve himself in his children's lives because that's Elly's job (and also because he's biologically incapable of understanding that other people have emotional needs), he never quite figures out that she doesn't have many friends.
