Mike is horrified when reminded that the beef he assumes comes from a store actually spent a lot of time walking around a field getting fattened up for slaughter.

(Strip Number 5060, Original Publication Date, 17 December 1988)

Panel 1: We start things off with Bev telling Elly to get a roast out of the freezer for dinner. She explains where it come from when she says that they'd butchered a cow last spring and there should still be something left.

Panel 2: Since Elly doesn't know what the phrase "butcher's paper" means, she tells Bev all she sees is things wrapped in brown paper.

Panel 3: Bev says that she's in there somewhere before freaking Mike and Elly out by telling her to look for anything marked "Daisy."

Panel 4: We are then invited to glare reprovingly at Mike for being a foolish city boy who thinks meat comes from a store when he thought-bubbles that he can tell that this is gonna be a long two weeks. This is because we're dealing with a moron who thinks that reminding kids that their meal used to be alive is going to make them respect their parents instead of turning them into committed vegans.

Summary: I remember that Red Green once said that he wasn't quite sure where vegetarians come from but he's pretty sure that they used to work in slaughter-houses. Let us reflect on that a while. Also, let us reflect on how stupid Elly is to not understand that all she's doing by reminding her kids that other people don't get holidays is making them guard their own free time more jealously.
