Just as Lynn hears the words 'sugar cereal' and 'junk food' when people say brand names of products she hates, it's sort of obvious that when someone makes the mistake of saying that they like the presence of her company and don't see why she should be holed up in a fantasy capsule, she hears "we think of you as being no more human as Willy The Black Spaniel and expect you to work and suffer in silence and anonymity."

(Strip Number 1358, Original Publication Date, 22 October 1988)

Panel 1: Having explained to the kids that they've convinced her to duck that night's meeting, she asks if they're happy. Mike says yes.

Panel 2: Since she can't NOT do things, she asks if they'd like to play Monopoly or Scrabble or do some baking as a means of asking what's on the agenda. Mike says that his agenda is doing nothing.

Panel 3: Elly is confused, angered and horrified because she can't understand WHY they want her to stay home if she's just going to sit around quietly. Mike doesn't know quite exactly why but it's sort of like having a dog.

Panel 4: Since he's a mush-head who doesn't think about what he's saying, he doesn't realize that his comment about how you don't always wanna do stuff with a mom either but it's great having them around is not going to be taken well. One can hardly blame Elly for being angry because once again, Massive Flapping Anus Mike has reminded her that he ain't ever going to outgrow the idea that her place in life is standing by waiting on him hand and foot.

Summary: The reason he doesn't pick up on the fact Elly calls him a disrespectful twit is the lard-headed jackhole never manages to understand that his anxious need to have Mommy around in case he gets a booboo is seen for what it is: his being a snotty little puke who thinks he needs to be carried around on a fucking litter.
