We foreshadow Annie's marital troubles when she openly criticizes Steve's never actually doing anything with the garbage that never does come in handy.

(Strip Number 4986, Original Publication Date, 24 June 1988)

Panel 1: As Elly does her gardening, Anne comes to the fence to congratulate her on getting a new kitchen before explaining that it's driving her nuts.

Panel 2: As she points to a huge pile of wreckage, she tells Elly what's driving her crazy: John's habit of letting Steve have all the stuff he tore out of the old kitchen.

Panel 3: When Elly asks, Annie says that yes, Steve actually does have plans for all of this stuff.

Panel 4: The problem is that he never actually bothers doing anything with all of the crap he salts away.

Summary: Again, this is rather familiar to me. There was always going to be a use for various things but either it was not gotten around to or done in a slipshod manner.
