(Strip Number 1291, Original Publication Date, 10 May 1988)
Panel 1: Connie tries to let We Moms off the hook by insisting that women are simply puppets of the evil fashion industry who buy whatever they're told looks good on them.
Panel 2: She then sets up the weak punchline by invoking the story o0f the Emperor's New Clothes.
Panel 3: Elly makes that idiotic palms-out pleading gesture when she reminds Connie that the Emperor in question wasn't wearing anything.
Panel 4: As she and Connie look at the rather abbreviated styles current in the late eighties, the prude in Lynn emerges from Connie's mouth and says "EXACTLY!!"
Summary: Any strip about revealing clothing on Elly is not just about her feeling that she's fat and ugly. We also have to remember the gym class arc that had Lynn squeal about all of the eyes in the locker room judging her and finding her wanting. (Also, there is the delightful possibility that she'd scream in anger about their dereliction of duty if they didn't care one way or another how she looked.)
