Trash Bag Johnny says the exact thing needed to kill Elly's good mood about Spring.

Panel 1: We find Elly on the back porch in a rare good mood as she tells John to look at the beautiful sunshine and feel the warm breeze.
Panel 2: She then says that Spring is finally here because she can feel it in the air.
Panel 3: Since John is a bit dense, he doesn't understand why telling her that the compost is starting to thaw might be the mood-killer it so obviously is.
Summary: John says a lot of stupid things like that because he confuses being a literal-minded moron with being practical.
