John is slightly better than Elly because he doesn't blame the children for his lack of interest in socializing with strangers he can't have anything in common with.

(Strip Number 4909, Original Publication Date, 29 December 1987)

Panel 1: As he pours himself a cuppa coffee, John downplays the tragedy of not going to the party. He says that he must be getting old or something but he'd rather stay home on a New Years' Eve than go out.

Panel 2: This is because his idea of the ideal New Years' Eve was to spend it with the people he likes best.

Panel 3: She smiles when he says that the people he likes best are right here.

Summary: Again, this is the sort of thing I liked when I liked the strip. It's not too preachy and no one is getting insulted or mocked.
