Elly is vaguely gratified to realize that Mike is always going to be psychologically dependent on her to one extent or another for the rest of his natural life.

(Strip Number 4892, Original Publication Date, 20 November 1987)

Panel 1: We find ourselves watching Elly ask herself why she resents staying home with Mike so much. After all, she used to thought-bubble that they never actually CALL you negligentlove staying home when he was five or so.

Panel 2: She assumes that it's because when he was younger, he needed her and that clearly doesn't seem to be the case any longer.

Panel 3: Mike wanders into the kitchen and calls for her; she asks why.

Panel 4: When he says he wanted to make sure she was still there, she's vaguely touched.

Summary: How very distressing to have to realize that one of the warm moments I used to love when I loved this strip are actually a celebration of her fear of being useless and his pathetic emotional dependency on her.
