Mike wants to go trick-or-treating but he doesn't want to call it that because he's this cool grown-up dude now.

(Strip Number 1217, Original Publication Date, 29 October 1987)

Panel 1: We find Mike and Brian walking to the Pattermanse after school; when Brian asks him if he's going trick or treating this year, Mike dismissively rebuffs the suggestion.

Panel 2: Of course, he MIGHT go out to protect Lizzie.

Panel 3: He might also wear a costume AND collect candy as well.

Panel 4: Still though, he won't go trick-or-treating because that's just for kids.

Summary: Since Mike is back to being balding and he's doing a kid thing, we're probably being unintentionally beaten over the head with the idea that Elly and John are panicking over nothing again. What we're looking at is something that his moron parents and clueless creator don't recognize: a dumb kid who thinks he's smarter and more mature than he actually is.
